Captain is a senior commissioned officer rank commonly found in navies. It is common for the commander of a ship to be referred to as "the Captain", regardless of rank, although officers in command of vessels below the rank of Captain are officially known as Commanding Officers or C.Os. It is the highest senior officer rank just below flag officers (admirals).
